How to watch TV online for free - MakeUseOf.com

Yes, You CAN Watch TV Online Legally & For Free

watch tv onlineWhether you’re thinking of cutting the cord or just want to watch TV on your own schedule instead of the television network’s, there are more legal ways to watch TV online than ever. Even better, many of these legal options are free. Most of these websites will expose you to commercials – someone has to pay for the free TV – but you’ll end up watching commercials if you pay to watch TV the traditional way, anyway.
Many of these services are only available in specific countries, such as the USA. Some services are only available in the UK, so even Americans can’t watch everything. If you’re one of the majority of human beings living outside these two countries, never fear – we’ve covered easy ways you can get access to region-blocked media services, wherever you live.

HitBliss

HitBliss is a new service. It’s a sort of store you can purchase TV shows and movies from, just like Apple’s iTunes. However, you can also watch targeted ads and receive credit you can put towards watching streaming TV shows and movies. Watching two minutes of ads gives you roughly enough credit to pay for a TV show episodes, so HitBliss appears to have fewer advertisements than traditional television.

Hulu

Hulu is well-known in the USA as a popular way to watch recent TV shows. Unlike services like Netflix, Hulu offers recent TV episodes from currently airing seasons. You’ll have to pay for a Hulu Plus subscription to watch some shows – and older seasons of shows – but Hulu Plus also offers a week-long free trial where you can watch TV online – everything for free.

Television Network & Show Websites

Every television network has its own website, and many networks offer recent episodes for free streaming. For example, you can find recent episodes of The Office on NBC’s website for The Office. The Daily Show and Colbert Report offer full shows on their own websites, too. These only work on the USA – in other countries, you’ll need to use the appropriate television network’s website.
For example, The Office airs on Global TV instead of NBC in Canada, so you’d need to use Global TV’s website for The Office in Canada, not NBC’s website for The Office.
This can be a bit complicated, and individual episodes can be hard to find as shows are scattered across websites and networks, but you’ll often find recent episodes for many shows on their official website for your country.

Netflix/Lovefilm/Amazon Free Trials

Netflix, Lovefilm (in the UK), and Amazon Prime Instant Video are all popular ways of watching TV shows online, but they’re not free. However, it’s easy to forget that Netflix, Lovefilm, and Amazon all offer free trials you can enjoy for 30 days. On Amazon, you’ll need to opt into the free trial of Amazon Prime to get access to the free-with-Prime Amazon Instant Video catalog.
At the end of the 30 day period, you can cancel your subscription if you don’t want to pay for the service.

Crackle

Sony’s Crackle offers a limited catalog of TV shows (and movies) for completely free streaming. To get all of its content, you’ll have to be in the USA, although some of its catalog is also available in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Like many services, Crackle offers a mobile app.
In the US, Crackle offers Seinfeld, Dilbert, and a variety of other shows and movies. Only 9 episodes of Seinfeld are available at the moment, so that should give you some idea of Crackle’s limitations.

YouTube

YouTube is a common destination for people looking for free TV shows online. You can find lots of free TV shows on YouTube. But let’s be honest – most free TV shows on YouTube are put up by users and not officially sanctioned. However, sometimes television networks put up free TV show episodes on YouTube.
YouTube offers a YouTube TV Shows page where you can watch TV online – watching shows that have been put up on YouTube legitimately. Sometimes TV networks may put up episodes of their own TV shows on their own YouTube channels, as HBO did for a limited time with the first episodes of some of its new series. Selection will vary by country, as with the other services here.

Livestation

Livestation offers video streams of live TV news networks. They’re completely legitimate and approved video streams, too. You’ll find a lot of big news networks here, including BBC World News, CNN International, Bloomberg, Sky News, and Al Jazeera English. Some of the networks, like BBC World News, require a subscription, but many are free. Unlike many other services, Livestation appears to work in all countries without any region-blocking.
We’ve previously taken a look at other websites where you can watch news at online, including Livestation.

watch tv shows online

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer offers a variety of BBC television shows for free in the UK, including the popular Doctor Who series. As with other services on this list, international users can get in on the action, too.
We’ve covered how you can access BBC iPlayer and stream TV shows outside of the UK.

watch tv online

TVCatchup

TVCatchup is a free service for people living in the UK. It allows you to watch over 50 channels of live television from your computer, phone, or tablet. It doesn’t offer individual episodes on-demand, but live streams of the networks.

5 Easy Ways To Dowload & Convert Online Videos like uTube

Streaming video websites are such a big part of our lives, it’s hard to remember a time when they didn’t exist. These websites revolutionized our computer video experience – no longer do we have to download every single video we want to watch – it’s all right there!

But the opposite is also true. Sometimes sending a link or embedding a video is not enough, and we need the actual file, or only its soundtrack. And when that happens, the default FLV file format rarely cuts it. Luckily, there are several downloaders-converters out there that make it easy as pie to download videos and convert them into almost every possible format.

Xenra

Xenra is an easy-to-use web app which both downloads and converts YouTube videos into multiple formats. You can use it to either download whole videos, or extract entire audio tracks from YouTube videos.

download videos from internet

It’s very easy to use. Simply enter a valid YouTube link in the address bar and click the big red shiny “Download Now” button. You can then choose which format you want your video or audio file to be in, choose its quality and control several other aspects of the download.

download free videos

When you’re done, click “Start Conversion”. Xenra will start by downloading the video to its servers, and then convert it into the requested format. The process is rather swift, depending of course, on the video you chose and the quality you selected.

When it’s done, you can download the file, share it, embed it, and generally have fun with it.

ClipConverter

ClipConverter is another excellent web app which can be used with multiple streaming video websites, not just YouTube. It can even convert or extract audio from video files you already have on your computer.
To start, paste the video’s URL or upload the file you wish to convert.

download free videos

Now choose which format you want the downloaded file to be converted into. Here too you can download the entire video or extract only the audio. If you wish to download only part of the video, you can specify start and end times and get only that snippet of the video as the final product. When you’re done, click “Start!”.

download videos
ClipConverter downloads and converts your video – and does so extremely quickly – and presents a download link along with a QR code, for downloading directly to your phone.

To speed things up even further, try ClipConverter’s browser add-ons for Firefox, Chrome and Safari, or use the handy dandy bookmarklet.

ConvertVideoToAudio

ConvertVideoToAudio is not as slick as the former two web apps, and not nearly as fast. What it does have going for it, are some unique file formats most other such converters don’t offer.

download videos

The website itself is way too cluttered with ads, and there are no settings to choose from except format. Having said that, you may find it useful if you need to quickly download and covert an online video into one of these formats, and while you can’t control the quality, it ends up being surprisingly good.

KeepTube

KeepTube is another download and convert service which you can use in multiple ways, although only with YouTube videos. Similar to other web apps, KeepTube sports the copy & paste option, but another way is to add the word “keep” before the word “youtube” on any YouTube URL you’re currently watching.

keeptube-2

Both the copy/paste method and the “keep” method will direct you to the KeepTube website, where you can choose your preferred quality. KeepTube can be used mainly for full video downloads (HD and HQ included), but you can also use it to convert videos into MP3s.

keeptube-1

If this is not quick enough, you can download a plugin for Firefox or Chrome, or use the bookmarklet. Note that the web app will attempt to launch a Java applet. If this is not to your liking, you can use the non-Java version of the app.

Freemake [Windows]

If web apps are not your cup of tea, and you like the feel of a good desktop app under your feet, this is the option for you. Freemake is a fantastic video converter for Windows which we’ve mentioned in the past, which now also offers Freemake’s free video downloader.

freemake-1

This slick piece of software grabs your video links from the clipboard. Copy the video URL and simply click the “Paste URL” button. The software can be set up in advance with your favorite settings, and will start downloading and converting immediately. When it’s done, you can even play the new file directly from the app.
If you turn off the one-click download option, you can set up the quality, format and location for each file separately. The downloader can also be used to extract audio from videos.

download videos from internet

Note that the software requires an installation of the latest version of .NET. If you don’t have it yet, it might take a little while to download.

Conclusion

Last time I actually needed to download and convert a YouTube video from the Internet, it proved to be quite a difficult task. But downloading an converting online videos has been getting increasingly easier, and after only a year or two, the Web is teeming with quick and simple options. Now I can’t wait for it to becomes even easier.
Know of some more easy-to-use video downloaders that also convert? Know of an important option we missed? Share in the comments!

Apps to Rip DVDs

Below are 2 articles from the excellent webiste MakeUseOf.com. I've mentioned some of these previously.

Easily & Quickly Rip DVDs With These Windows Apps

People have been ripping DVDs for years, so most people assume it’s an entirely solved problem. That’s not the case. Searching Google for “rip dvd” will present a variety of options and articles. Some are valid. Some are for paid software, or software which either does not work, or tries to install adware.
There are still only a few free DVD ripping utilities that are of high quality, consistently stable and capable of handling most movies on your shelf. Let’s take a look at the options.

Freemake Video Converter

dvd rip

This software is (relatively) new among the contenders, and it shows. Its big advantage over other free video conversion suites is a friendly interface that’s easy to understand. Most video converters are not that complex, but they have a tendency to obscure the interface behind an archaic GUI or strings of technical text that look like nonsense to most users. Freemake doesn’t make these mistakes.
Of course, ripping DVDs is only one of many functions this software can fill. It’s a multi-purpose video converter that is designed for people with a variety of different devices and media, which makes it a good choice if you’d like a multi-purpose utility.
On the downside, Freemake will ask to install some extensions and DIVX software. It didn’t appear to even ask before attempting to install a Chrome extension. These extras aren’t malware according to Avira antivirus and Comodo firewall, but it’s annoying to see installation attempted without user permission.

ImgBurn

how to rip a dvd

This software is based off an excellent tool that was known as DVD Decrypter. That software ran across legal issues because it was specifically designed to defeat DVD encryption. You can still download DVD Decrypter from an unofficial website but development on the project has halted.
ImgBurn looks a lot like the software it is based on – which isn’t exactly a compliment, as that software ceased development in 2005. Still, creating an image of a DVD only requires a few clicks.
Although ImgBurn does not claim to decrypt DVDs, it had no problem handling most of the DVDs I used when evaluating these programs. Only The Dark Knight tripped it up – but I’ve yet to use free software capable of ripping that movie.
This is an disk imaging program with rip capability, not a converter, and that means DVDs are saved as .ISO image files. You can view the finished .ISO file with VLC and other free media players.

HandBrake

dvd rip
Handbrake is one of the most well-known free video converters, and for good reason. It is free, quick, and comprehensive. It also doesn’t try to install any third-party software.
Perhaps the only problem with HandBrake is an interface that can be a bit difficult. A destination must be selected to save a file, but you’re not prompted for one automatically. Instead it must be manually selected.
There are options for things like cropping, filters and more. Power users will appreciate these fine details, but newbies may feel overwhelmed. We’ve published several articles about Handbrake over the years, so check them out to learn some of its tricks.
With that said, Handbrake does include some device-specific presets that are useful for iPhone and Android owners. That’s great if you want to rip DVDs so you can watch them on a mobile device.

Conclusion – Be Cautious

Lots of people want to rip their DVDs. Many of those people are not geeks or technology enthusiasts. They just want to rip a DVD as quickly as possible.
The result? Many suspicious programs and websites. Browsing and attempting to install various freeware options constantly sent my security suite and my firewall into a rage. There’s a lot of bogus software out there.
There are also a lot of DVD rip tools no longer supported by their developers. They aren’t a threat, but are often buggy. These three video converters are all programs I’ve used in the past on various computers and they’ve proven reliable.
Do you know of a high-quality free DVD ripping alternative that was missed? Let me know in the comments.

Free Music List July 2007

By on July 19, 2007 - Tags:
The article Free Music List December 2005 was a very successful article back in 2005 and I finally found the time to update the article with new sites and get rid of links to sites that do not exist anymore. Most of the sites listed below allow downloads even for non registered users, several ask you to register after downloading some albums and some require a registration before you can start to download or stream music.
I added genres to several sites if it was obvious and did not mention one if the site offered more than one genre. Downloads means that you can directly download music – normally mp3 files – from the site while streaming means that you can stream the music on the website.

Take a look at my article about Grab++ for a possible method to download music from sites that stream music. Feel free to add any music site that you know and is not in the list.

UPDATED AS OF 01/08/10: Please check 10 More Sites for Free and Legal Torrents for an updated list of free and legal downloading destinations.
Bittorrent downloads are either illegal or DRM-infected, right? Wrong. There are plenty of websites out there that offer free and legal Torrent downloads to save bandwidth and make file sharers happy at the same time.
Granted, sites like The Pirate Bay are still the major source for Bittorrent traffic. But legitimate platforms offer enough video goodies to clog your tubes for days. Here are 10 great places to get started:

Legaltorrents.com distributed 90 terabytes of Creative Commons-licensed content in the last seven months alone. The site features lots of music downloads, but also has some good video content like the South African TV show Go Open and the Firefly-Documentary Done The Impossible. All the files are centrally seeded, so your downloads will always have a happy ending.
Public Domain Torrents features hundreds of Torrents from out-of-copyright films in numerous formats. Unfortunately there is no central seeding, so you better stick to the recently posted items.
Legit Torrents is a new site that aggregates freely available Torrents, including video, games and Linux distributions.
Bittorrent has taken a beating for its recently launched download store, but the site still offers lots of freely downloadable content as well. Unfortunately the free stuff gets buried under the rentals and sales, which are for some reason deemed more “relevant.”
SXSW.com features music and video downloads to promote the South by Southwest festival. This year’s film trailers aren’t up yet, but there’s 3 gigabytes of MP3 music to get an idea of what’s gonna go down in Austin this March.
Speaking of music: Etree is hosting live recordings of bootleg-friendly artists in the lossless FLAC audio format.
The soon-to-be-relaunched Azureus home base Zudeo offers a mix of music videos, user-generated content, professionally produced movies and short films. Worth a look because of its extensive list of fan films and HD content. All downloads are centrally seeded.
Torrentfreak is known for its up-to-date coverage of the BitTorrent scene, but the site also operates an own tracker and regularly features legal downloads like the official Bittorrent release of the movie The Corporation.
Revision3.com is technically not a Torrent site, but the online video network utilizes BitTorrent like few others. Every episode page features a multitude of Torrent links, and you can subscribe to each show with an RSS-Feed including proper Torrent enclosures.
Finally, no list of legal Torrent platforms would be complete without a Linux ISO site like Linuxtracker.com. Advocates of the free operating system have been using BitTorrent for a long time to spread the latest releases of their preferred distribution. Linuxtracker lists all major flavors of Linux, including video-specific releases like the open source DVR system KnoppMyth and the multimedia production platform 64 Studio.
